Just like that, another year is behind us! It’s strange to think that just a year ago we had no idea about The Tree of Life, Midnight in Paris, The Artist, or any of the other amazing movies that came out in 2011. What do we have to look forward to in 2012? Well luckily I’ve done some homework, so I have at least some idea of what’s in store:
The Secret World of Arrietty (Feb. 17)
Those of us who have experienced a Hayao Miyazaki film know that The Secret World of Arrietty will be just wonderful. Even Miyazaki’s mediocre films are much better than 90% of the movies targeted at children and families coming out of Hollywood. If you want a family-friendly movie that is refreshingly whimsical I highly recommend “The Secret World of Arrietty”, especially in a time of the year when most films will be low-quality. For an idea of what this movie will be like, watch “Spirited Away” or “Howl’s Moving Castle”.

Moonrise Kingdom (May 25)
Wes Anderson’s last movie
was the quirky, witty Fantastic Mr. Fox, which started a cult following among
my friends back home. Eccentric style and enjoyable performances
made Fantastic Mr. Fox so fun, and a viewing of the trailer for Moonrise
Kingdom reveals that Wes Anderson’s newest will probably be as strange and
wonderful as his previous works. Also the fact that it stars Bill Murray,
Edward Norton, Bruce Willis, Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton and Jason
Swartzman makes it look even more fun.
Brave (Jun. 22)
I don’t even need to give an
explanation here. I mean, it’s Pixar. The Incredibles? Finding Nemo? Toy Story?
Monsters, Inc.? Up? WALL-E? Rataouille? Do any of these ring a bell? If not, go
get your brain checked.
The Dark Knight Rises (Jul. 20)
I’ve heard plenty of gripe that “Anne Hathaway as Catwoman?? Terrible choice!”, or “Bane’s voice is weird, I don’t like it!” or “That football field collapsing is dumb, how would that happen?” Trust me, people, this guy Christopher Nolan knows what he’s doing. Heath Ledger as the Joker seemed like a joke back in 2007, but lo and behold, that became probably the most iconic performance of our time. Tom Hardy as Bane is a excellent choice, and in 6 months we will all be talking about him. I wouldn’t bet on the movie being any better than The Dark Knight, but I’m confident that the third installment will live up to its predecessors and give us a satisfactory end to the Batman movies.
Django Unchained (Dec. 25)
With one look at the
director (Quentin Taratino) and one look at the cast (Leonardo DiCaprio, Samuel
L. Jackson, Christoph Waltz, Jamie Foxx, Keith Carradine), a film-lover will
begin counting down the days to next Christmas, with Christmas itself being an
afterthought. If you are unfamiliar with Quentin Taratino, you have almost a
year to familiarize yourself. I highly recommend Pulp Fiction and Inglourious
Basterds, and then join me in the countdown.
Others that I’m really looking forward to:
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
The Master (directed by Paul Thomas Anderson starring Philip Seymour Hoffman)
Only God Forgives (directed by Nicolas Winding Refn starring Ryan Gosling)
Casa de mi Padre (the new Will Farrell movie)
Prometheus (the new Ridley Scott movie starring Michael Fassbender, Noomi Rapace, Guy Pearce and Charlize Theron)
The Great Gatsby (starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan)
Others that I’m really looking forward to:
Untitled Terrence Malick Project (a Terrence Malick film
starring Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdams, Christian Bale, Javier Bardem, and Rachel
Weisz)
Skyfall (the new James Bond movie directed by Sam Mendes
starring Daniel Craig, Javier Bardem, and Ralph Fiennes)

no hunger games?
I think Argo, with Ben Afleck directing and Bryan Cranston is one worth looking into. Gravity, Alfonso Cuaron directing George Clooney and Sandra Bullock. The Lineup for Wettest County looks amazing although I don't know about the director, and Salmon Fishing in the Yemen for my Ewan McGregor quirky fix. BOOM!! But no, your list is good too.
A few other additions that I feel are worthy:
"Cosmopolis" - Directed by David Cronenberg, starring Robert Pattinson, Paul Giamatti, Juliette Binoche
"Dark Shadows" - Directed by Tim Burton, starring Johnny Depp, Eva Green, Michelle Pfeiffer, Helena Bonham Carter
"The Gangster Squad" - Directed by Ruben Fleischer, starring Sean Penn, Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, Nick Nolte, Emma Stone
"World War Z" - Directed by Marc Forster, starring Brad Pitt
Gonna be a great year for movies...
I'm super looking forward to "Dark Shadows" and "World War Z." We also need a shout out for "The Avengers."
